My first photo shoot in LA!

Hi everyone!

Today was a LONG day. Since, I moved out to LA,  I was lucky enough to sign with a modeling agency who helped me book a Skechers job in the first week! However, they wanted me to get all new photos for my portfolio that are more natural and "commercial" looking. So, I'm thinking to myself, GREAT more money to spend.

Therefore, today I shot with an incredibly talented photographer, Marcel Indik. I have to say, I was intimidated because I haven't really done shots like these in a LONG time. I realized that I have a lot to learn with modeling and it isn't just about posing and making a pretty face. It's about telling a story and conveying it through your eyes and body language. I feel like modeling is definitely an art because it is a lot like acting. You have to play make believe and really feel like you are in a certain moment and be able to express it beautifully. There are also SO many different looks that an agency needs in order to market you to a variety of clients. I incorporated looks from clean, no-makeup head shots, swimsuits, lingerie, casual denim and vests, active lifestyle, classic and sophisticated, soft and pretty, to a crazy and bright dress I could move gracefully in to show off my dance background.

I was so nervous to put all these outfits together. Styling is a LOT of work, I didn't know how I was going to do it because not only am I pretty bad at it and really impatient, I also don't have the hippest wardrobe in the world. Then, a lightbulb went on and I remembered...HELLO my sister, Kenzie is a fashionista extraordinaire! Wow, I was in luck. A week before the shoot, Kenzie went through all the looks I needed and we put AMAZING outfits together. I don't know how she does it, it just clicks with her. She puts things together I wouldn't even think of. Not only did she relieve the stress of putting my entire wardrobe together (primarily from her closet), she came with me to the shoot and the photographer ended up using her as his assistant too! For all the other models out there who do all this on their own, plus hair and make-up...more power to ya! At least, I realize my weaknesses and am lucky enough to rely on my sissy.

I haven't seen the photos yet, I am meeting with Marcel tomorrow to go through them so hopefully they turn out okay. He did send me one photo though, and it is of Kenzie and I. To thank her for all her support, expertise, and hard work I am posting the photo below. Let us know what you think!

Let me know if you guys have any particular requests for my blog next time :-)

Until next time,
Kristen

Big Move!

Hi everyone!

This is my first blog since the close of my reign as Miss USA on my new website! I want to blog about subjects that those of you who are reading will be interested in, so I would love your feedback. You can send requests in through my contact page :-)

Two weeks ago, I made a big move from the fabulous east coast to Hollywood! I can't believe I am actually out here. Ever since I was a little girl, I always wanted to live in NYC and LA and now I have done both! I never thought it would actually happen, but thankfully my sister was kind enough to let me live with her until I get settled and start working. That made the move a lot smoother.

Since I have been living in NYC, I gave my car to my younger sister who is in college. So when I decided to move out here, I was car-less! LA is definitely a car city because there is not a good public transit system like NYC and it takes at least 30 minutes to get anywhere. My first goal was to find a car and after going through days of looking at used cars through private owners with no warantees...Reid, my boyfriend, helped me find an AMAZING deal at Hyundai. Now, I am so happy to be leasing a 2010 Hyundai Elantra that is under warantee!  Reid is a master negotiator, praise the lord!

After I got my car, I have been busy with agent meetings, castings, classes, and social outings with some incredible former Miss USA and Teen USA's! LA has ridiculously gorgeous weather and there is so much to do and explore. I have been hiking at Topanga Canyon, learned to like sushi, started taking a great workout class that combines ballet and cardio, and eaten at some delicious Mexican restaurants!

I can't believe pageant season has already started with the wins of Miss Florida USA 2011 and Miss Texas USA 2011! It's such an exciting time. If any of you competing need my help, just give me a shout :-)

I hope all of you have a spectacular week!!
Hugs,
Kristen
